Biography
Dr Huang is an Associate Professor with UTS TD School and serves on the executive committee of UTS Visualisation Institute and the advisory group for UTS Connected Intelligence Centre. He was the program
leader for Human-Data Interaction at
Swinburne Data Science Research Institute and deputy director of
Master of
Information Technology Program at Swinburne, a senior lecturer at UTAS, and a senior research scientist at CSIRO ICT Centre (now
Data61). At CSIRO, he worked on a number of strategic and commercial multi-million dollar projects related to virtual/mixed/augmented reality, mobile/wearable/ubiquitous computing, computer-supported collaboration, and computer graphics/vision/visualization/multimedia. In those projects, he was a research leader responsible for defining and pursuing research questions. He designed
multimodal system interfaces, visualizations and interaction methods, investigated HCI, CSCW and human factors issues, evaluated usability and user experience
and conducted data analytics in industrial domains including mining, education,
health and manufacturing.
He received his PhD in computer science from University of Sydney. He also had formal training in experimental psychology and professional experience in psychometrics. His research interests are broadly in human computer (data) interaction, visualization
and data science. He has
over 150 publications
in these areas including 6 books; one of
his books: Recent Trends
of Mobile Collaborative Augmented Reality Systems, was among the top 25% most downloaded eBooks of Springer, a major
academic publisher. His
research has achieved impact both in
academia
and in
industry. He gives keynote/plenary speeches, invited talks and seminars at
conferences and universities worldwide, and has been named among the Standford's top 2% scientists in the world since 2020.
Dr Huang served as a general chair, a technical program chair, or an organizing
chair for a number of international conferences and workshops. He is a PC member
for more than 100 conferences and also regularly invited to serve as a reviewer or a guest editor on topics within his fields of expertise such as Nature Scientific Reports, Applied Cognitive Psychology and
Information Sciences. He is a grant proposal assessor for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the Australian
Research Council (ARC), and an examiner of PhD theses for ten top Australian
universities. He has been Associate Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Visual Languages and
Computing, Associate Editor of Behaviour and Information Technology, and a founding chair of the technical committee on Visual Analytics and
Communication of IEEE SMC Society, which was awarded the most active technical committee in 2022.
He has successfully developed/co-developed a number of projects funded by
government funding agencies and commercial partners, including prestigious and competitive ARC DP and LP grants, with a
total value of over 3 million dollars. He also provides consulting services to
internal research teams and external companies on user requirements analysis,
user interface design, production process optimization, human factors issues and
data analysis. He has developed a 350-item checklist for heuristic evaluation of
3d multimodal user interfaces. The external companies he had worked with include EnergyAustralia, Echelon Mining Services, SGE Analytical Science, BHP Billiton, Boeing and Oracle.
Dr Huang is a professional member of Human Factors & Ergonomics Society of Australia, and a member of IEEE, ACM and ACS. In recent years, he has been a research fellow at University of Sydney and Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), and a visiting researcher at University of Arizona and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
